Physically Disabled

We are a demo site for Muskegon Area District Library for the Visually and Physically Disabled. We are here to help individuals who do not wish to travel to Muskegon to try the audio book unit. We also have applications available for individuals interested in the service. 


What is this?

A FREE library service administered by the National Library Service (NLS) for the Blind and Print Disabled. 


Who is served?

The residents of Muskegon and Ottawa counties.


Who is eligible?

Patrons who are legally blind. 

Patrons with a strong visual disability.

Patrons with a physical disability that keeps them from reading. 

Patrons with an organic reading disability, such as dyslexia. 

Patrons whose limitations are temporary, due to treatment or surgery, for the duration of their disability.

What is available?

Books and magazines on cartridge, played on a digital player. 

Braille books and magazines. 

Downloadable books and magazines via the Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) program. 

The Howard Miller Library only has a demo unit for the cartridge player.

This unit must stay in the library at all times.

Please speak to a staff member about trying the unit. 


How does one apply?

Applications are provided by Muskegon Area District Library and are available at the Howard Miller Library. Completed applications may either be mailed directly to the address on the application or returned to the Howard Miller Library.
