Switch from Overdrive to Libby

Attention, OverDrive app users! OverDrive is discontinuing the legacy OverDrive app in early 2023 and transitioning users to the Libby app. Libby is OverDrive’s newer app for browsing and enjoying digital content from our library.

It’s time to give Libby a try! All your loans, holds, and wish list items will be waiting for you in Libby when you add your library card.

Libby also comes with new features we know you'll love, like:

  • Tags to categorize books however you'd like-you can even sync your OverDrive wish list into a tag!
  • A central bookshelf for all loans and holds
  • Customizable notifications for ready holds, new magazine issues, and more
  • Compatibility with Apple CarPlayAndroid Auto, and Sonos speakers

How can you upgrade from OverDrive to Libby?  See this link for more information.

What is OverDrive?

OverDrive by Rakuten is a library app that allows card holders to download ebooks and audiobooks straight to your device! This app allows Howard Miller card holders to check out ten books at a time and have fifteen holds. Books are checked out to patrons for two weeks. Like books checked out from the library, if there are holds on the book, you cannot renew that book but can be placed back on hold for it. We highly recommend using the Libby app for all devices*.

What is Libby?

Libby is OverDrive's all-in-one app. She collects all of your current checkouts and lets you search and checkout the OverDrive collection. It is easier to borrow and download books on Libby than it is on OverDrive.

How do I get started on Libby?

On your computer:

  1. Go to - You're done!

Note from OverDrive: offers the same great features as the app-store version of Libby, except the ability to download books for offline use. To access this functionality, users can download Libby for iOS or Android on a compatible device. Update as of 10/30/2020

The Libby app and OverDrive app should be removed from Windows computers. OverDrive is choosing to focus on the Libby app for the widely used Android and iOS platforms and will no longer support these apps. But you can always go to the Libby website to access our digital collection if you do not have a compatible device to download the app!

On your device*:

  1. Go to the app store for your device and search for "Libby by OverDrive". Download the app. Now get ready to sign up!

Signing up for Libby - Get your library card ready!

Libby is great at helping you sign up via the app. It is important that you look at your library card to see if you are a Howard Miller or Herrick card holder. If you have a Howard Miller Library card then choose "Lakeland Library Cooperative." If you have a Herrick District Library card then choose "Midwest Collaborative for Library Services."

*Kindle Fires are not compatible with Libby at this time. Use a smart phone/tablet/computer to send ebooks to your Kindle to read.  Kindle Fire users can sideload Libby onto their device manually with the APK (Android Package file), since Amanzon has not yet accepted Libby's submission of the Libby app to the Amazon Appstore.  To learn more click here.

*Some devices will not be compatible with OverDrive or Libby apps. Unfortunately, older devices cannot be updated to have the most recent software and will not support the apps. To learn more click here.

If you need to use OverDrive (NOTE: OverDrive is being discontinued in early 2023.  See above for more information):

  1. Go to the app store and download OverDrive (we only recommend this if you are on a Kindle Fire).
  2. Click Sign in.
  3. Select Howard Miller from the list.
  4. Enter your card number and you're in!
Checking out books through the OverDrive app is not as easy as it is on the Libby app.
