This week's Series Saturday might seem like a throwback for some of the moms out there, but it's actually a relatively new version of the series! In 2006, Raina Telgemier worked with Ann M. Martin (the series creator) to illustrate Kristy's Great Idea, a remake of the original book that started it all. The graphic novel managed to capture young readers as well as its predecessor and was followed up with three more graphic novels based on the original series. These books follow the same plots and have the same characters that many adults will remember - a great opportunity to discuss the books and characters with your children!

Children's, Graphic Novels, Fiction

Location in the Howard Miller:

Junior Fiction Graphic Novel, JF (Graphic Novel) BABY-SITTERS

Meet the Characters:

This series follows the adventures of four friends who have started their very own business. Kristy is the founder and president of the Baby-Sitters Club. She loves playing sports and leading the group. Stacey is the vice president of the club and recently moved to Connecticut from New York City. She is fashionable and is learning how to live with her recent diagnosis of diabetes. Mary Anne is the secretary of the club. She is loves having her nose in a book and is nerdier than the rest of the group. Claudia is the treasurer of the club. She's older than the rest and is very artistic. There will be at least two new characters coming out in the new books because they are original stories. Each book is told from the perspective of the girl mentioned in the title, but with the graphic novel setting they are able to show the activities of the other members.

Number in the Series:

There are currently four books in the series, however, there are at least four more books coming out in the near future! Two of which will be based on novels from the original series and two new stories.

  1. Kristy's Great Idea
  2. The Truth About Stacey
  3. Mary Anne Saves the Day
  4. Claudia and Mean Janine

Be sure to place these books on hold as they are often all checked out at once!

Final Word:

This series is an excellent book series for coming of age girls. The stories are of four friends who are experiencing real life problems - whether it be sibling rivalry, friends who are mad at you, stressful classes, or learning to cope with illness. Plus, there are babysitting stories, something fun for many young girls! The graphic novelization also provides children with another way to read and visualize the story. We hope your young ones find it as enjoyable as we did!
